The data is clear: Global emissions are going up. Voluntary pledges to prevent new fossil fuel projects and curb devastating practices such as mass deforestation are failing to prevent the destruction of nature. Inaction is not an option. We need an acceleration of responsible innovations that can have a direct impact on the environmental solutions the world so urgently needs. Digital infrastructure and technology services can have a hugely negative impact on sustainability (the internet accounts for 3.7% of total global greenhouse gas emissions), but digital can also be an engine of sustainability — if it’s positioned effectively and at the centre of your responsible investing with innovation strategy. Today, digital technologies are being used to measure and track sustainability progress, optimize the use of resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and make possible a more circular economy. But digital technologies also enable innovation and collaboration. Artificial intelligence in design, additive manufacturing and digital twins are some of the powerful tools enabling the next wave of climate change solutions. Internet of Things–enabled sensors, blockchain-based authentication, data-sharing platforms and gamified apps are examples of technologies that foster collaboration across the value chain and align participants on common metrics and goals.
